“Umbrella Man”–While traveling 2000 kilometers through the Arid Territories of Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia in 2012, my safari-mate Jim Gardiner pointed out a Somali nomad off in the distance, walking with a line of camels and goats while carrying a bright orange and black umbrella to protect him from the intense Sabena Desert sun. I took a series of photographs from which this 5-foot long painting was later completed in my studio.
